- Abalone is a univalve mollusk (phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda) which means it has just one shell.
- They also go by the name of ‘sea ear’ due to its shape.
- The iridescent nature of their shells makes them prized for more than their meat. Their shells iridescence and shell color depends on the species, and ranges from a dull green to purple-pink, and green-blue to a pearly white.
- Abalone are closely related to marine snails, but their shells are flat.
- The holes that are found in abalone shells are used in reproduction, waste removal, and respiration
