Identifying Characteristics and Biology

  • Very brightly colored rockfish having orange red or red bars on a pinkish white body.
  • First band stops at operculum.
  • Maximum length is 26 inches, with 16 inches more common.

Range and Habitat

  • Central California, to Baja, California.
  • The are found from 100 to 1380 feet deep, and mostly bottom dwelling reef fish.

Market Forms

  • Their bright colors make them a popular sport fish.
