Identifying Characteristics

  • Cylindrical, elongated bodies.
  • Backs range in color: blue/green, olive-green, tan.
  • White/silver bellies.
  • 1 to 3 series of dark spots down the middle of the backs.

Range and Habitat

  • Southern Africa to the Eastern Pacific.

Market Forms

  • Commercially fished for fish meal, also for consumption canned, frozen, and fresh.
  • When caught fresh, best prepared grilled or fried – whole.
