Southern Fried Catfish

Yield 6-8 servings

Classic recipe for fried catfish adapted from The Southern Junior League Cookbook.


  • 3 pounds catfish fillets
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 cups yellow cornmeal
  • Cooking oil for deep frying


  1. Rinse and pat dry the catfish fillets. Salt and pepper them, and cut into serving size pieces.
  2. Place the cornmeal in a large plastic zipper bag, and add in the catfish. Shake until the fish is coated.
  3. Fill a deep fat fryer with cooking oil to a depth of 3 inches. Preheat oil to 350 degrees F and fry until the fish is golden on all sides, turning once.
  4. Serve hot.
